North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD) needed to install a force main wastewater system through the median of several busy streets through the City of Plano, TX, but wanted to avoid road closure. The PVC pipe previously used had failed repeatedly. Congestion was a major issue, so, in order to minimize the impact on nearby communities and avoid snaking under other utilities, the installation required open cut, horizontal directional drilling (HDD), and auger bore, so a more flexible, durable solution was needed.
The Solution: Thanks to open cut and trenchless technology methods, installation was completed with a minimum of disturbance to the surrounding communities and roadways. Approximately 21,000 ft of 24” DIPS DR 11 Sanitary Sewer HDPE Force Main. The project utilized 1,584 LF of auger bore with casing, 4,009 LF of horizontal direction boring, and 15,852 LF of open cut installation.
Ease of installation: Not only were large excavation costs avoided, installation was easier thanks to the durability of HDPE. With a combination of strength, and ductility, HDPE is the most durable pipe on the market, so you don’t have to baby it during installation like PVC.
Superior service: No project ever goes off without a hitch, but thanks to the multiple joining options with HDPE pipe, we had the solutions the contractor needed. So, when installation conditions warranted, they were able to utilize flange adapters as well as a wide variety of other mechanical fittings and couplings.
No leaks: HDPE pipe is heat fused together to form a connection that is as strong or stronger than the pipe itself. Fused connections are self-restraining, so costly thrust restraints or thrust blocks are not required. Because it has no joints, HDPE pipe simply does not leak. So, it completely eliminates infiltration and exfiltration problems.
Corrosion resistant: HDPE pipe is well suited for sanitary sewer applications due to its inherent resistance to wet hydrogen sulfide gas and acids. It is not susceptible to corrosion from aggressive soils, will not tuberculate and does not support biological growth.
Lower lifetime cycle costs: With a technically-proven 100-year design life, no cathodic protection needed and a consistent flow rate throughout the life of the system, HDPE pipe has very low maintenance requirements.
